Although the season is only into its second week, some high-quality hockey has already been on display, with several noteworthy encounters played out in Round Two on Anzac Park in Warracknabeal on Saturday. |
Last weekend saw the annual visit to the Wimmera railway branch lines of the inspection train, known as the AK Cars. The first round of the Wimmera Hockey Association season last weekend yielded some predictable results but also showed some form that suggests it will be a competitive season. Despite being the first competitive hit for many players since the end of last season, round one of the Wimmera Hockey Association witnessed some quality hockey along with the return of Friday evening matches and two teams from Dimboola. |

Wimmera hockey will launch a big season this weekend with the return of two teams from the Dimboola club who will mark their return with the first Friday evening matches in five years and on Saturday, and two big clashes between the reigning grand finalists in two divisions. Fifty-six of the names on the Dimboola town Honour Rolls represent those who volunteered for service overseas in World War One from the district who did not return. In 1924 Dimboola RSL Sub-branch held their ninth ANZAC Day service at Dimboola’s new War Memorial, the Soldiers Memorial Higher Elementary School. Police will be dispelling some of the most common myths about speeding as they engage with drivers over the Anzac Day weekend. The Dimboola Memorial Secondary College will celebrate the centenary of its Soldiers Memorial Hall next month. Anzac Day will be marked across the country with services and marches which give the opportunity for the public to contemplate the significance of the day. The Fire Danger Period (FDP) will finish tonight, at 1.00 am (Monday, 15 April) in the six municipalities across western Victoria. One of the biggest events in the Wimmera this year will take place on Saturday, both in the sky above the Nhill aerodrome and on the ground. With fire restrictions easing in some parts of the State and calm autumn conditions, hundreds of private, agricultural and planned burns are expected to take place in the coming weeks. The sounds of winter sports are beginning to be heard across the Wimmera. This weekend marks the end of daylight savings for another year.
